Flash Fiction

Brief Encounter

2021 Shortlisted in the Mslexia Flash Challenge (Issue 89)

Helena buckled her green leather boots, picked up her bag, and headed out into the cold.  She had fifteen minutes.  Enough time to buy a coffee and walk around the park.

In the queue next to her was a tall woman with orange Doc Martens shoes.  Tall, with big hands and small breasts.  Helena imagined touching the shoes, pushing them onto her feet, pulling the laces tight.

Micro Fiction

Adopting Leporidae

It is easy to confuse two similar animals.

Within one hour of birth, a hare is fully independent whereas a rabbit is born undeveloped, eyes closed, no fur, unable to regulate its temperature.

When I brought you home, I assumed you were a rabbit; dependent on me for food, warmth and kindness.

But you have strong hind legs like a hare, kicking me off you. You prefer no food, if food means you will have to endure my touch.

Now you are older I stare at you through the glass, suspecting at any minute you will disappear into the undergrowth.
